fishing lights
3D-printed lighting for an East Village apartment
Our apartment in the East Village, while beautiful, is a very awkward place to light properly. The double-height ceilings mean that overhead lights are hard to install, and as a result our dining area was always very dark.
I designed and installed these custom lights to hang from the railings of the lofted area and illuminate our dining table. The pivot and rope elements make it look a bit like a fishing rod, and so I started calling them Fishing Lights.
The spines are wooden frame spars from Blick's, and all the white components are custom-designed 3D-printed PLA. I modeled them in 3DS Max and printed on our old Makerbot. The 'rope' is fabric-covered twisted-pair cable that plugs into the wall, and the bulbs are some nice Edison lamps in brass cages that we found in Chinatown.
